Information: Tiger Grass
(Thysanolaena maxima) also known as “Broom grass” throughout SE Asia, where the Tiger grass is cultivated mainly for the long purple flowers or panicles used in soft broom making. Here in the sub-tropical parts of Australia they are prized as the ultimate non-invasive rapid growth, low maintenance privacy screen or hedge around fence lines and swimming pools, perfect in a Balinese garden or in large veranda pots. Tiger grass is not to be confused with Bamboo, even if there are some similarities in looks. Fact is, Tiger grass is a clumping perennial plant; this means that the base will not spread any further than approx. 1 meter when mature. Typical plant height is 2.5 meters with some mature plants reaching up to 3 meters in forest plantations. Tiger grass is an extraordinary good looking evergreen ornamental feature in large pots, with its graceful natural mushroom shaped appearance. Note: Pots especially require regular deep watering during the hot dry summer months. For in ground planting; Tiger grass will perform best when hooked up to micro drips or a spray system. As for maintenance, it’s then just a matter of cutting off any spindly looking culms every now and then, thereby encouraging the thicker healthy looking suckers to thrive.
